We here at Starprime know the benefits of playing video games, but don't take our word for it here what the researchers are saying.
In the first study, the researchers evaluated participants who were not frequent gamers. The participants played either a fast-paced game (Unreal Tournament), a slow game (Sims 2), or nothing for 10 50-minute sessions over the course of 11 weeks. The researchers tested the subjects’ proactive cognitive control and visual attention before and after gameplay. The action-game players showed a marked decrease in proactive cognitive control compared to the Sims 2 gamers. However, the action-game players also showed an increase in their visual attention abilities.
Researchers at Columbia University found elementary school-aged children who played video games had nearly twice the odds of high intellectual function and high overall school competence, though they caution against over-interpreting the study, however, as setting limits on screen usage remains and important component of parental responsibility as an overall strategy for student success.
Playing a video game causes positive structural brain changes in regions responsible for spatial orientation, memory formation, strategic planning, and fine motor skills, with potential implications for psychiatric disorders, new research suggests. Investigators from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany, suggest that video game training might be therapeutically useful for patients with mental disorders such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's dementia, in which brain regions are altered or reduced in size.
A common viewpoint is that playing video games is intellectually lazy. New research however, suggests such play actually may strengthen a range of Cognitive skills such as spatial navigation, reasoning, memory and perception.
This new avenue for the use of video games (diagnostic and therapeutic tools) is incredibly exciting and useful, and could be a massive benefit for seniors for the permanent future. It’s also just incredibly, ironically nifty that all this time, while deriding us whipper snappers for our video gaming ways, older adults should have been playing right alongside us. When you finally look at the breakdown of age statistics among gamers, we can see that pretty much everyone games now no matter how old they are.
